Spring Gardening in Minnesota

Spring can be a volatile time for Minnesota weather. As soon as things start to warm up, another blizzard is right around the corner. Fluctuating temperatures and moisture levels provide a unique challenge when it comes to gardening. Here are a few ways to keep your green thumb strong this Spring!

Plant Vegetables

  • Enjoy the benefit of successfully growing a garden along with a reward on your dinner table. Find a spot in your yard that is very sunny and gets at least 6 hours of sunlight. A good size vegetable garden to start with is 10′ x 16′.

Spring Cleaning

  • Clear away mulch, leaves, and debris from your garden and yard. The ground is full of moisture in the Spring, and this will help the soil dry out enough to plant.

Use Native Plants

These plants are used to the Minnesota climate and give you a better chance of gardening success!

  • Trees: Bur Oak, White Pine
  • Perennials: Purple Cornflower, Blazing Star, Rudbeckia
  • Pollinators: Native Milkweeds

Get a Head Start

  • Plant seeds indoors or buy already-started plants to transplant to your garden when the weather cooperates and the soil is ready.

Start Weeding

  • Get a jump on weeds by pulling or treating them as soon as you see them. Weeds start growing early and are easier to deal with the sooner you find them!
